Myah Blankinship

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting to shooting a coworker.

Myah Blankinship, 23, was sentenced Friday, two months after pleading guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the shooting of a coworker on Sept. 26, 2023.

St. Louis police said officers responded to a report of a shooting shortly after 4 p.m. on Sept. 26 at a Family Dollar store located at the intersection of Saint Louis and North Florissant avenues. When officers arrived, they found a 30-year-old woman lying on the ground inside the store with a gunshot wound to her face.

The victim was critically injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. She later told police she was involved in an altercation with the suspect and walked away when the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot her.

Police recovered the gun at the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, police interviewed several witnesses who said they saw the shooting. They told agents that Blankinship and the victim, who both work at the store, got into a fistfight. After the fight had been broken up, Blankinship shot the victim. Two children, who were under 17 years old, were nearby.

The fistfight was also caught on store surveillance video. Police said it showed that victim, who was unarmed, had walked away from Blankinship when she pulled out a gun from her purse, walked up to the victim and shot her. Blankinship then left the store.

Blankinship was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the assault charge and three year for armed criminal action.

AFFTON, Mo. — A man and woman from Texas died after the SUV they were in rolled over and crashed during a pursuit and shots were fired in Affton Friday night, authorities said.

According to Cpl. Logan Bolton with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Texas Department of Public Safety informed MSHP that a wanted 33-year-old man was heading to the St. Louis area in a red Range Rover. The man was identified Friday night as Ryan Phillips.

Authorities were concerned for the safety of a woman believed to be with the suspect, identified as Delisha Evans.

Missouri troopers spotted the SUV shortly after 5:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 44 near Missouri Route 141. Troopers began a pursuit after the driver refused to pull over.

The SUV exited onto South Elm Avenue and continued onto South Rock Hill Road. The pursuit ended in a rollover crash near Pardee Road.

A few moments later, two troopers at the scene advised shots had been fired.

Phillips and Evans were both pronounced dead at the scene. Bolton said the exact cause of their deaths is under investigation. State police confirmed a trooper fired his weapon. A gun was also recovered next to the Range Rover. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether shots were fired at the troopers.

There were no injuries to law enforcement.

Police in Princeton, Texas, had activated a Critical Missing Person alert Friday morning. Police and fire crews were called to a structure fire and learned that Evans was missing from the residence. Police believed she was in danger.

Princeton police said Phillips was the primary suspect in her disappearance. License plate readers helped locate Phillips' SUV in St. Louis County, which initiated the pursuit.

Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Brandi James to contact 314-615-5400.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County police say a woman who was considered a mentor to a child has been charged with multiple sex crimes, according to court documents.

Brandi James, 25, was charged on Tuesday with two counts of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy and one count of third-degree child molestation. She is being held on a $300,000 cash-only bond.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the mother of the girl her daughter’s diary. Inside it, the child had written that she had been sexually involved with a 22-year-old church mentor. Police said information found on the girl’s phone supported the allegation and they had engaged in sodomy on at least two occasions in 2022.

The victim told police that they had engaged in sexual contact over their clothes.

"It's hard to hear, and it should be hard for us to hear because our kids shouldn't have to endure these victimizations by adults," said Amy Robins, the Forensic Services manager at the Children's Advocacy Services of Greater St. Louis.

Police said James met the 13-year-old girl while at the House of Deliverance Church in the 9300 block of St. Charles Rock Road.

Pastor Eric Battle of the House of Deliverance Church said James has never been involved with the church in any capacity besides being a member occasionally.

"Abuse starts with first looking for a vulnerable child that they can build that relationship with, and then what we would call manipulate or grooming the situation or the environment to make sure that they can take advantage of them in those ways," Robins said.

According to court documents, James told other people about the incidents but refused to speak to police.

Robins said that 90% of the time, a child is victimized by someone they know or trust.

"Typically, it's not strangers who abuse our kids. It is individuals that the children have a relationship with, are part of their family, are within that inner circle, and have that trust and access to that child or teenager to perpetrate those acts on them," Robins said.

Detectives believe the incidents happened between Jan. 1, 2022, and Nov. 30, 2022. The church has cooperated with the investigation, police said.

The St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is leading the investigation.

Detectives asked anyone who thinks they may have been victimized by James to contact the St. Louis County Police Department Child Abuse Unit at 314-615-5400.

"If people believe that there are potentially other victims in the case, I want parents to know that the Child Advocacy Center of Greater St Louis is a support to help navigate this conversation with your children. We encourage parents to have that conversation early and often with their children so that this topic is normalized and that it isn't something that they feel ashamed of or uncomfortable going to parents about if they find themselves in a situation like this," Robins said.

Pastor Battle said James was a college student who would come to church on her breaks. He said that once the incident was brought to his attention, he made it clear it needed to be reported.

Battle released the following statement:

"Brandi James is not now, nor has ever been, an employee nor mentor at the House of Deliverance Church. Her relationship with the alleged victim took place outside of the church without any involvement with the church. All employees and volunteers at the church are required to submit and pass a criminal background check. The church is, and has been willing to assist in the investigation in any way we can."

St. Louis County prosecutors on Friday charged 32-year-old Nicholas Gamble, of St. Louis, with one count of vehicle hijacking, a class A felony. He is confined in the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

The witness who pulled Gamble from the vehicle held him on the ground until police arrived and arrested the suspect. Police said the incident was captured on surveillance video.

ST. LOUIS — A 16-year-old boy who was found fatally shot in a St. Louis alley last month was robbed and shot by a man who suggested a gun trade, according to charging documents.

Prosecutors charged 25-year-old Dominic Cody with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. He was arrested Thursday and was being held without bond.

Officers responded on the evening of Aug. 11 to a shooting call in the city's Walnut Park East neighborhood. They arrived to find 16-year-old Marco Deloch shot in the chest in an alley near West Florissant and Thrush avenues.

Deloch was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, witnesses said Cody approached Deloch in the alley and suggested they trade guns. Deloch then forcefully grabbed one of Deloch's guns and used it to shoot him in the chest. Cody then stole a second gun from Deloch and ran away.

Witnesses later identified Cody in a photo lineup.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — Fairview Heights police are investigating after a large fight shut down the Midwest WingFest early on Saturday night.

According to organizers, Midwest WingFest in Fairview Heights draws more than 25,000 people every year. The festival fills up the St. Clair Square parking lot for two days with dozens of booths and live music, and proceeds benefit local combat-wounded veterans and fallen heroes.

Organizers said this year's festival was going well until the last few hours of the event.

Fairview Heights Police said as soon as the sun went down Saturday, minors started showing up without their parents and were turned away, but some jumped the fences.

Police said in a statement, "Juvenile fights happened in the parking lot outside of the fence line. Several gunshots near the Firestone parking lot were heard by multiple people."

Organizers told 5 On Your Side this was the first time something like this had happened in 16 years and they go through extensive measures to keep people safe.

A statement shared to the festiival's Facebook page said, "When it became clear that we would not be able to safely control the entirety of the situation, we coordinated with Fairview PD to make the decision to close early."

Police said they had to call in other departments and ended up arresting two people for fighting. In addition, several juveniles were pepper sprayed in the incident. They said organizers pay the city to have extra police officers at the event and place cameras throughout the space.

The statement from Midwest WingFest said, "We are grateful that no one was seriously injured last night and everyone got home safe."

While the event is over, there is still a way to give back. Click here to learn more about donating to the cause.

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — Two women were arrested in St. Peters after three elderly people with intellectual disabilities were found in a 96-degree van on Thursday, police said.

Niyah Brown, 22, and Alexis Daggs, 29, were both charged with three counts each of abuse of an elderly, disabled or vulnerable person.

St. Charles County Police Department sent officers to a parking lot for a wellness check inside a white parked van. During that time the officers reported that the temperature was 96 degrees outside and three older individuals were inside the van sweating profusely.

The witness who called the police told the officers that the victims were in the car with the engine off and the doors and windows closed when they noticed the van. The witness then went into a nearby store and asked them to announce the van to the customers shopping. After a few minutes, police said a couple of customers returned to the van and noticed the doors unlocked. They opened the doors to allow for air circulation and called 911, according to the police report.

Officers on the scene tried to start the van but could not find the key.

The victims were "secured in seats, with no mental capacity to call for help or even open a door on their own," according to the police report.

Brown and Daggs eventually came to the van and identified themselves as the people responsible for the older adults. Police said that both Brown and Daggs told officers that they left the car running while they went into a few stores. Daggs was found to be in possession of the van's keys, police said.

Police concluded that Brown and Daggs neglected the victims for at least 40 minutes in severe weather conditions without proper access to air or the ability to exit the van.

The victims were taken to a local hospital for heat-related injuries, police said.

Brown and Daggs were being held on a bond of $50,000.

ST. LOUIS — A woman indicted for defrauding a federal child nutrition program out of some $20 million will remain in jail until her case is resolved after violating the conditions of her release and refusing to surrender to the FBI last week.

Federal Magistrate Judge Joseph Dueker on Wednesday granted prosecutors’ Aug. 15 motion to revoke Connie Bobo’s bond.

Bobo, of St. Charles, was charged in October with wire fraud and identity theft in connection with a scheme to claim millions of dollars in federal reimbursement for meals she claimed her nonprofit, New Heights Community Resources, served to children. She has pleaded not guilty.

The Post-Dispatch first reported on her nonprofit and the food program in November 2022. The newspaper found her nonprofit had claimed over $20 million from two federally funded child nutrition programs in two years and that her nonprofit purchased a $975,000 house where she lived.

She was released on bond pending trial. Among the conditions of her release was that she relinquish control of the finances at the day care she owns, Infinite Wisdom Early Childhood Center on Harry S. Truman Boulevard in St. Charles.

But earlier this month, prosecutors sought to revoke her bond after they say she admitted to a pretrial officer that she still controlled the day care’s finances.

On Aug. 28, the FBI went to Bobo’s home to execute an arrest warrant, but she refused to exit her house for almost two hours. Agents knocked on her door, announced themselves and called her cellphone. Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman contacted her lawyer to get him to tell her to surrender, and he assured him she would.

“It was not until the FBI agents on the scene that morning began the process of breaching the front door of her residence that Defendant exited her house through a side door and was quickly arrested,” Wiseman wrote.

Prosecutors said the conduct fits a pattern. They point out she was also charged with obstruction for forging an invoice sought by a subpoena during their 2023 investigation.
